It was named after Castor, the legendary Macedonian hero and son of Zeus; its history has been illustrious throughout the times of Macedonian kings, the Byzantine Empire , the revolution against Ottoman rule and the Bulgarian threat.
What has kept Kastoria charming and increasingly productive is the art that was developed during the Byzantine era and today comprises the basic source of income for its residents. Furring in Kastoria has developed so far to date that, being the only processing centre in Europe , the city attracts the interest of the whole world in the sector of fur trading.
One of the most important centers for the manufacturing, processing and supply of furs at a global scale, today Kastoria comprises one of the most important sectors of Greek Foreign Trade and the National Economy.
